I’ve decided mission scaredy cat is over…for now. I made it to the shower and out the door without being caught. Its when I came back from my errands grocery shopping I let my scaredy cat guard down.
I thought the coast was clear besides this Per guy that I couldn’t quiet tell was even still here or not. Lisa had left some baked goods (SCORE) and a note saying she had left for home and won’t be back till next week Thursday. Which I remember her saying so I was like SCORE. This way I could get used to this place on my own. Then as I’m putting things away and chopping up veggies in the process for my stir fry. To my great horror I hear the sound of women heals.
CUE SCAREDY CAT ACTION which I was actually in the process of putting things away in the side mini room where all shelf food would go. Cause the steps were getting louder and heading my way. I kind of peaked my head out first and there she was kind of peaking her head at me Hallo! My cover had been blown. However as usual the whole thing was very painless. Much to my excitement afterward I pretty much understood everything she said and even attempted a simple question. In fact the convo went something like this however remember all in German:
Hey so I’m about to go home well as I have wrote here and please help yourself. A friend and I made them and we had extra oh and do you want this zucchini I have in the fridge? (me:ya ok) ok great! Well I will be gone till next week so if you dont eat it too its ok but you can have it. (me:thanks, um so the new roommate comes this sunday?) Yeah he does so I dont know if you will meet him but if you do maybe it will be really quickly since you leave for italy. (haha yeah ok) Ok so see you till you return from Italy then. (yep bye have fun!) thanks.
So now that my second encounter was perfectly fine and bearable. Ive decided I am no longer really that scared of her. Now we await for the new guy…that I’m sure I’ll be scared all over again.
So the other day I met my one and only other girl roommate. Her name is Lisa and she seems very nice, and we had a decent conversation in German together. After the small chit chat for a minute I began to say in German. Sorry my German isn’t that good and she responded with oh well I think your German is better than my English kind of things. That’s when I realized I’m really going to be learning German this semester. I have another roommate like that Daniel. However now I know why Lisa didn’t really talk to me when I met her at their WG party. She probably heard me mainly speaking English and was afraid to speak with me kind of like Daniel. So I’ve officially spent one night here and I’m such a coward. I know Lisa is here in fact I can hear her on the phone in the hall way. However I’m sneaking around listening for bedroom doors to shut so I know I can run out to the kitchen or the bathroom. I don’t know why I’m really doing this but lets just say that timid girl inside of me is awake.
Not gonna lie right now I’m thinking man I wish she would get out the kitchen. So I can go run take a shower and run my errands haha. On the outside I’m 24 but on the inside I’m 10 again.
Well not quiet yet but I’m loading up the last suitcase to face a soon dreaded departure. Today Natascha knocked on my door and said she was going to make apple pancakes and if I would like some. This is the love and nurturing I get here…why on earth would I ever want to leave. Not to say these new roommates won’t be, but they are mainly guys and I don’t see them popping their heads into my room and telling me they are going to make baked goods and if I want some any time soon.
I finally came to the conclusion my ideal situation is when I move to bring Frieda and Natascha with me. Its a total me trying to eat my cake and have it to, so I know it can’t be done. Man this is heartbreaking. I really feel like a little duckling leaving her nest away from her Mama duck. It something that has to be done and cant be stopped.
Today I went with Tiffany to go get her brother and his wife at the airport. Turns out they werent on the flight we were hoping they would be. So we had to wait awhile and watched some other flights come in.
I tell you I felt like I was watching the first 2 minutes of the movie Love Actually. This one flight came in from London and these two girls were jumping and down for joy. They kept saying NANA NANA NANA!!! Waiting for the doors to open. It was so cute cause they were clearly half German and their mom is British so when they spoke English they had British accents.
As we awaited for the Munchin flight that did have her brother on it arrive. We noticed some Germans seemed to be setting up a picnic. First came the basket of bread and a bottle or to of Sec (sparkling wine). Then came in two crates of beer, table, balloons with a Mexican flag. This picnic was turning into the best welcoming party at the airport if you ask me! Seriously I wanted to take a picture of it cause I couldn’t believe I was witnessing it. It wasn’t so shocking it was happening because really you can go anywhere with beer in Germany. Yes anywhere. You can even drink in the car! Well obviously not the driver, but passenger….back seat passengers are allowed to have open bottles of alcohol in the car.
So folks can’t decide who’s house to throw a party at? Just do it at the airport! problem solved.
Well this happened about a week ago but my friends and I were out dancing one evening at a club called Pascha. I’ve learned something new about the whole bar/clubbing scene in Germany. Unlike anywhere else you go if a guy orders you a drink that means the following things.
1. He finds you attractive
2. He pays
3. Despite whether you think he is attractive or not you are to stay and talk to him for as long as that drink last.
In Germany when a guy orders you a drink the following happens.
He walks away right as the bartender is about to come back with your drink and does not pay.
Which is really just awkward if you ask me and makes no sense. Why ask me what I’m drinking it and order it for me? I went home and told this story to my roommate and she began to crack up and just responds with “THAT IS SOOOOO GERMAN! I swear that only happens in Germany.”.
Well check out that lengthy sentence folks. Fyi I can not take credit if that is even a proper sentence…but its a sentence damnit. All it means is I belieive that my german is better now.
I keep finding myself while hanging out with germans understanding more and actually speaking to them. However its normally simple stuff like talking about learning the language and stuff. Nothing about poletics or some deeper meaningful topic.
However I just want to say Im really proud of how much I have learned. It makes me wish I had been in Mexico a year. I think a 2nd semester would of really helped me out. However in a way I kind of am getting my 2nd semester being around the spanish. However not gonna lie it makes it hard when speaking a language. Your language becaome a mixture of spanish and german. However that is really only when I try to switch from spanish to german that happens.
Honestly I dont know how I managed doing this. However last night was my first night having sauer kraut in Germany. I know! Trust me its not like I went out of my or anything. Its just one of those things where its not as common as we invision it to be. Kind of like these giants pretzels. Maybe its cause I’m not living in a city but still Hildesheim isnt like some village.
Well maybe I’m just in the wrong location of Germany. Since the reason I finally had it is because my roommate Natascha prepared a typical southern German meal for us. It was as we say SEHR LECKER! (really yummy). I honestly have to say if you are gonna study abroad and live with people from the country you are going to study at. Its probably Germany. Assuming you love food. Which who doesnt? I love how they are all about this family style dinner. Its so normal for them to just invite you over in between classes for lunch. If someone did that back in America you are more likely eating ramen noodles or a pizza. You know something completely effortless where as Ive seen Frieda whip up some kind of hot dish or something that clearly would take an average person an hour to put together.
I really think my roommates Frieda and Natascha are secretly superwomen. I feel like they can truly do anything. Ok somehow this entry went from talking about suer krauts to highly praising my mitbewohners (roommates).
The Spanish have decided to take us to an Island called Ibiza. FINALLY! I’m always much excited to going to countries that have this thing we call sun. Such a rare thing here still in Germany. The past two days I look out my window and there was nothing but gray skies.
Days like that make it seem like trips to Italy and Ibiza couldnt come soon enough.
Yes going back to Italy again but this time I’ll get a chance to visit Verona and Venice. However hitting up Rome, Florence and Milan again too.
Oh sunny days to come!!! You bring much joy to this clouded heart.
